Growing Nuclear Power Creates Opportunities for Ukraine’s Uranium Projects – BGV at the World Nuclear Symposium

The global nuclear power industry is moving from ambition to the delivery of new projects while ensuring sufficient supplies of uranium, conversion, enrichment and nuclear fuel fabrication is becoming one of the sector’s key challenges. This was one of the key takeaways from the World Nuclear Symposium 2026 in London, attended by representatives of BGV Group, including Yuriy Bakarzhiyev, CEO of Nuclear Energy Systems of Ukraine LLC (NESU).

The annual symposium of the World Nuclear Association (WNA) was held in London on 9–11 September with the theme “From Ambition to Action.” This year’s discussions focused not only on the growth potential of nuclear power, but also on what is needed to deliver it in practice: scaling up production, standardizing technologies, strengthening supply chains and ensuring reliable access to nuclear fuel.

According to the World Nuclear Association, global nuclear power generation reached a record 2,702 TWh in 2025. At the same time, countries around the world are planning a significant expansion of nuclear generating capacity over the coming decades.

Industry leaders at the Symposium highlighted that the large-scale deployment of new nuclear capacity will require greater standardization of reactor technologies, equipment and manufacturing processes. At the same time, the expansion of the global reactor fleet will place increasing pressure on the nuclear fuel cycle and its ability to deliver the required volumes of uranium and other fuel-cycle services.

Uranium could become one of the key constraints on the industry’s future growth. Expanding uranium production requires significant investment and long lead times, while new mining capacity generally takes longer to develop than infrastructure at other stages of the nuclear fuel cycle.

“The key message from the Symposium is clear: increasing the number of reactors does not, by itself, guarantee growth in nuclear generation. New nuclear capacity requires uranium, conversion, enrichment and fuel fabrication to be available in sufficient volumes and at the right time. This makes the resource base an increasingly important strategic asset for the future of nuclear energy. As nuclear generation expands, so do the opportunities for Ukrainian uranium projects.

For Ukraine, this global trend is particularly significant. With a substantial uranium resource base and established domestic mining expertise, Ukraine has the potential to contribute to the diversification of the European uranium market and strengthen the region’s long-term energy security,” said Yuriy Bakarzhiyev.

Ukraine has significant uranium resource potential and remains one of the European countries with the highest shares of nuclear power in its electricity mix. Developing its domestic uranium resource base could strengthen Ukraine’s energy security while creating opportunities to integrate Ukrainian uranium projects into European and global nuclear supply chains.

The participation of BGV representatives in the World Nuclear Symposium provided an opportunity to engage directly with international industry stakeholders, including companies involved in uranium mining, nuclear technologies and the nuclear fuel cycle. The discussions at the Symposium further highlighted the long-term investment potential of Ukraine’s uranium assets and the opportunity to integrate them into the international nuclear market.
